Sheffield FC got to pay their own tribute to longstanding supporter and 'Behind The Flag' stalwart Trevor Herrington on Saturday.
Before the game against Goole AFC, a minutes applause rang out around the BT Local Business Stadium in memory of a man who encapsulated everything that is good about football. It was apt that Goole provided the opposition on the day, as their side included 2 ex-Sheffield players, Daz Winter and Mick Goddard. In fact, Daz Winter had posted his own message and condolences on the BTF site soon after the announcement of Trev's passing.
A Red and Black bouquet was presented to Trevor's partner Jeanie on behalf of everyone at Sheffield FC, by Club captain Tom Jones, escorted by Manager, Chris Dolby and Assistant Manager, Gav Smith. Trevor's friends assembled at the end of the ground as usual behind their flag to watch as Club fittingly took the three points off Goole to round off a fitting tribute to a man that will be greatly missed around non-league football.
A collection was taken at the ground in Trev's memory for MacMillan Cancer Support and a sum of just over £120 was collected on the day.
Trev was the longstanding author of the 'Trev's Travels' column in the club programme, bringing us news of his various trips to watch non-league football. His signature line 'Happy Travelling' sums up appropriately the attitude with which he attended matches and this rubbed off on the numerous spectators that Sheffield always take to away fixtures.
Some of the tributes paid to Trev and posted on the 'Behind the Flag' forum:
'The kind words and memories about Trev have moved me to tears. Trev was my partner for over six years and he meant the world to me. I knew very little about football when we met, but became passionate about it as time went by. I was buoyed by Trev's enthusiasm for the game and his beloved team. He was a wonderful, loving man, and he was so proud to be a supporter of Sheffield F.C. God bless all of you for keeping him in your hearts.' Jeanie Perrotti - Trev's Partner
'During my time at the club Trev always had time for a chat and was a top bloke. Very sad loss and i agree with everyone on here about the club doing something to honour him.' Daz Winter (ex Sheffield FC player)
'On behalf of everyone connected with Belper Town FC, many condolences to Trevor's family and friends, and all those connected with SFC who knew him. I met Trevor on many occasions and found him a warm, kind and knowledgable chap, with a wonderfully dry sense of humour. I recall fondly his little wind ups, which usually centred around some good natured banter involving mine or Jamesie's drunken escapades.I hope in heaven all the pitches have undersoil heating, the pies are cooked to perfection and you don't have to queue up for a pint!
RIP Trev - one of the good guys, taken from us far too early'. Neil - Belper Town
'Some of you may know me as the German supporters section of Sheffield FC. I have known this wonderful man for almost 20 years, and it was him who introduced me to this club back in the Don Valley days. Our relationship once started through our funny old game and developed into something very special. I will miss my best friend greatly. Despite this big, big loss you can count on my continuing support for SFC. That is what I owe him and you all.' Jan Leonhardt - Friend
