Woodley Sports Signings - Club Press Statement

Woodley Sports FC is pleased to announce 3 new signings Liam Higginbotham, Dennis Lee Sherriff and Ben Henry.

Liam rejoins Woodley Sports FC from NWCL New Mills FC. Liam enjoyed 5 years at Sports winning the Cheshire Senior Cup, NWCL promotion in 2003-2004 and NWCL goalkeeper of the year at only 17 years of age. Liam left Woodley to join former manager Chris Willcock at Mossley but didn’t enjoy his experience with the Tameside’s side and soon left to join another former manager Tony Hancock at New Mills. A knee injury in September 2009 and operation in December has restricted Liam’s football this season but he knows our club inside and out and when he expressed an interest in returning we have acted quickly to secure arguably one of the best keepers in non league football.

Ben Henry has been training with Woodley for the past month, Ben is a former Stockport County pro who injured his knee playing at Lambeth Grove in a friendly for County. Ben is a 14 stone 6’2” strong central defender who’s other clubs include Manchester City and Hyde United.

Dennis Sherriff joins Woodley from Rochdale AFC until the end of the season, a local Stockport lad who has played for our junior side Signol JFC.

Leaving Woodley Sports is Russell Headley, Russell joins fellow UniBond League club Colwyn Bay. He may not be the only player leaving Woodley as we have received additional inquiries for several other players & although two players have stated that they wished to stay we are unsure if Gavin Salmon will remain on at Woodley. He has been approached by Warrington Town and they are confident that he has joined the Cheshire side as they have issued a statement in their local newspaper. Although this report is premature as we hold his registration.

We are aware that we can not complete financially with other clubs but are confident that our young talented squad have turned the corner and the spirit within the club is very high. We need two players for every position, we have dipped into our reserve & even our youth team this season and all the hard work and financial difficulties have again been worth while, the 3 new additions to our squad will complement our playing staff and hopefully assist in our unbeaten run
